The Spitzerberg is a limestone block about 5 km long and 300 meters high in the far east of Carnuntum. It is located in the extremely wind-exposed plain between the Alps (Leitha Mountains) and the Carpathians (Hainburg Mountains).
Blaufränkisch is the traditional variety on the Spitzerberg. This strain has no problem with the extremely hot summer period when no rainfall is expected. In any case, Blaufränkisch waits until autumn to physiologically ripen and only slowly develops its charming notes of red berries, violets and a slightly spicy aroma at the end of September.
For the winery's top wine, Blaufränkisch grapes are selected from the oldest vineyards. There is a plot on the Spitzer site that was planted in 1955, a plot on the Roterd site (planted in 1965) and a plot on the Panholzern (planted out in 1975). These old vines produce the most elegant and finest wines with fresh acidity, precise aromas and high aging potential every year.
This wine owes its special delicacy and elegance to the great age of the vines, which are between 55 and 70 years old.
Juicy, delicately sweet fruit, elegant texture, ripe, well-integrated tannins, freshly structured, mineral and lemony finish, finely fruity finish, good potential for development.
A very complex wine with a lot of density, but at the same time fresh and playful. Overall, a wonderful expression of the limestone terroir.
The grapes are hand-picked and each overripe berry is neatly removed. In the cellar, the grapes are lightly crushed and partly macerated with the stalks in open fermentation vats. This leaching is very gentle and completely pump-free.
The grapes from the Roterd site are stamped with their feet every year. Fermentation starts after a few days thanks to wild yeasts. The spontaneous fermentation takes place very slowly and at room temperature, the mash is neither heated nor cooled. This guarantees very precise and aromatic wines.
After about 20 days, the wine is pressed and then matures in 1000 liter wooden barrels, whereby we do not use new wood so as not to cover up the fine fruit of the Blaufränkisch. During the 20-month maturation, the wine is only moved once and finally bottled without filtration.
Goes well with game. Great accompaniment to truffles too.
But: also a solo highlight!!!
