Winery Dorli Muhr

Dorli's Blaufränkisch are among the absolute best: Concentrated, yet fresh, elegant and mineral.

The Dorli Muhr winery is the result of a joint project by Dorli Muhr, the "Grande Dame" of Austrian wine PR, and the port wine great Dirk van der Niepoort.

In 2002, Dorli Muhr and Dirk van der Niepoort vinified a small amount of Blaufränkisch grapes from the Spitzerberg for the first time. The basic idea of the project was the revitalization of the Spitzerberg, a time-honoured vineyard that is geologically distinct from most of the Carnuntum vineyards, as its soil contains a lot of limestone.

As part of the Little Carpathians, the Spitzerberg is a region with a long history and produces excellent Blaufränkisch wines in particular. The mountain is one of the driest and sunniest places in Austria. In addition, there is a constant thermal updraft that dries the slope even further.

These dramatic conditions lead to poor growth and very small yields - but incomparable aromas and distinctive minerality. Dorli Muhr now cultivates 12 hectares of vines on the Spitzerberg using organic methods.

The vinification is very gentle, without the use of pumps. The grapes are neither heated nor cooled, the fermentation with wild yeasts develops naturally, slowly and automatically. The result: very concentrated wines, without opulence, but with a lot of elegance and lightness, which regularly receive the highest international ratings.

From 2002 to 2018 the winery was called Muhr-van der Niepoort. Dorli Muhr has been the sole owner since August 2019 and the winery officially bears the name Weingut Dorli Muhr.
